Hand Washing & Stain Removal
The way these rugs were meant to be cleaned
Authentic handmade rugs require specialized care. Our hand-washing process removes embedded dirt, allergens, and odors while protecting natural wool, silk, and vegetable dyes — never the machine methods that age a rug before its time.
Every wash begins with an inspection
Dust, dirt, allergens, and moisture settle deep in a rug’s foundation, where vacuuming cannot reach. Left there, they grind away the fibers, dull the colors, and shorten the rug’s life. Each rug we clean is first inspected — construction, dye stability, stains, existing damage — so the safest, most effective method is chosen before any water touches it.
If we find worn edges or loose fringe during cleaning, we will say so before it becomes an expensive repair.
Why hand washing, not DIY
Household carpet cleaners, steam machines, and over-the-counter stain removers can do irreversible damage to a handmade rug: excess water weakens natural fibers, harsh chemicals bleed vegetable dyes, aggressive scrubbing distorts the foundation.
- Protects natural wool, silk, and cotton fibers
- Preserves traditional vegetable dyes
- Safely removes food, beverage, and pet stains
- Clears odors from moisture and everyday use
- Extends the rug’s life through preventative care
How often
For most homes, professional cleaning every one to three years maintains both appearance and structure — more often with pets, children, heavy traffic, or allergy concerns. Many collectors pair a cleaning with a certified appraisal to document the rug’s condition and value.
